Cases of oesophageal cancer are increasing in the UK and affecting a younger age group. The symptoms of indigestion and reflux being so common patients often self-medicate for some time before visiting their GP. Early diagnosis can be life saving. Advances in Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy and investigative procedures are leading to improved outcomes for patients.
The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital - Upper Gastro-Intestinal Cancer team, have been performing Minimal Invasive Surgery since 2004 and are recognised internationally for their expertise and detailed research. Patients now recover in weeks rather than months from this most major operation entering both chest and abdominal cavities.
Devon Primary Care Trust plan to relocate this service to Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.
Members of the National Oesophageal Patients’ Association are convinced that such a move would be to the detriment of Patients, Clinicians and Research (it will require several years to train and establish a new team with the expertise of the existing team in Exeter; this will be necessary to attain Centre of Excellence Standards).
They ask for your support in opposing the proposal.
If you feel strongly about keeping this most vital service in Exeter and feel that you would like to lend your support, please contact:-
